Week 3 - Day 3

ALWAYS ROOM FOR ONE MORE -
LOOKING OUT FOR THE LONELY

Lunch time is the best time of any school day. It is the place where tator–tots are eaten and carrots are swapped for cookies. At lunch, we would all get together, sit and chat about homework or the plans for the evening or weekend. I remember Tony. Tony was very shy, loved video games and pets and had an extreme passion for baseball. He always would get to lunch before everyone else and would sit in the far corner of the lunch room in the same spot. He would bring his Nintendo Game Boy (yes... Game Boy) and play for the entire lunch hour. No one ever invited him to join them at lunch. My friends and I knew who he was. Our school was small so he was the new kid. One day, I remember Tony didn't show up for school. And we didn't see him for several days. Finally, it got around that Tony's mom had died suddenly and he wouldn't be returning to school. Now that I am "Beyond the Yearbook," I wonder if he ever had a friend to help him get through that time in his life or where he ended up in life. It breaks my heart now to think that he had no friends to share life with. No one took the time to reach out, and to love Tony.

TODAY'S DRILL:
Name people in your school that are loners... people who need you as a friend. What can you do to branch out your circle and be a friend to all? Tomorrow, invite someone new to eat lunch with you.
