GOSSIP
Read James 3:1-12
I hated gym class for several reasons. I did not like getting dressed in a large room with a bunch of other girls, you were rushed with fewer than 5 minutes to get ready to sweat, and the bathroom and locker room were the worst places in my school. The walls were covered with graffiti about who loves who and names of people surrounded by profanity. Not only did the walls have a lot to say about others, the girls in the class shared even more! Gossip was a normal part of gym class. The funny thing is people who gossip think they look good putting others down. The more bad things that they say about others, they think they themselves look better. The truth is, gossipers cannot be trusted. Although it may feel good to have someone share gossip with you, you can be sure that they will certainly share anything you tell them with others. Gossiping is a selfish act that does not show love to others. You and I both have stories of how friendships were damaged permanently because of gossip. Do you want to be known as a gossip?
TODAY'S DRILL:
How do you respond when someone comes up to you with some gossip about others? Think in terms of water putting out the flame of gossip and gasoline growing up the flame. Which image best describes you? Write down what you can say the next time someone approaches you with some "news."
